Description
Big Ben is the nickname of the great clock bell at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, although today the name also refers to the clock and the clock tower. The bell weighs almost 14 tonnes and each clock face has a diameter of 23 feet. It became fully operational on 7 September 1859 and is now one of London's most striking symbols, standing 316 feet high. The clock has to be wound three times a week and coins are periodically added to or removed from the clock or pendulum to maintain its accuracy.
