The most successful carrier of the Second World War was equipped with the most powerful engine of its time: the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 dual-row radial, 2000hp, 18-cylinder engine. It was the first American warplane to exceed 400 mph in flight. The aircraft features an unusual "inverted gull" wing, which allows for a short undercarriage, while permitting a large diameter propeller, required by the powerful engine.
